Tara Howard is a certified birth doula CD(DONA) and photographer who lives and works in Palm Springs, CA. After 11 years in New York City, she headed West with her husband Joe and daughter, Sierra. She graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Theatre and Photography, moved to New York City, and spent the last decade working in both fields. She came to birth work after a long invested interest in women and birth and a desire to help mothers feel supported, informed and cared for. Helping women and their partners have a positive, supported  journey through such a transformative process as childbirth is her ultimate goal. With a calm and nurturing presence, she has been caring for others since she was a young girl - from adventures in babysitting to being an aunt to her 11 nieces and nephews. She’s taken a lot of pictures of those kiddos, too.

The Green Tara is a Buddhist deity, known as a savioress, offering protection, warmth and compassion. She represents the feminine and is often described as the remover of obstacles.

Years ago, when I was traveling in Asia, I met a very talented artist who was painting The Green Tara as both an act of meditation and skill. I took an immediate interest and was fascinated to learn about all she represents. When she was done with the painting, she mailed me a print and the Green Tara has been with me ever since. I look to her whenever I need help, to feel protected, or to find what I am looking for.

I find her qualities to be very powerful when it comes to birth and I strive to incorporate them in my work. My goal is to help women feel protected, warm, and safe; to help free them of their fears, support them, and to help remove any obstacles that might get in the way of their birthing experience.
